I can't for the life of me remember what the last production American car had a V12. The closest thing they have is a Viper with the 8.4L V10. Cadillac had the Sixteen concept with a V16, but other than that they stick to their Big Ol' 'Merican V8 Motors!

Cadillac had a V12 from '31-37

Lincoln had a V12 from '32-48

An extremely tortured version of the phrase "American car" might include the Group 44 jags.

Production? Because Chrysler had the "ME4-12" in 04. It's a MB engine so it's kind of cheating but it's IN a Chrysler.

1999 Vector Avtech W12 - sourced from Lamborghini. Does that count?

Last one with american engine that I can think of is the 2002 Cadillac Cien concept.

I would like it if a car company would make a small displacement V12 for a mass produced vehicle. I like the thought of a 2.5 to 3.0 liter dual overhead cam V12 tuned to make about 250 to 300 hp for something the same size as the new Toyota GT86. I guess I want someone to build me a new version of an old school Farrari. :)

And I think Demon-Xanth's answer about Lincoln is correct. From all of my Googling I have reached the same conclusion.

That would be awesome if a manufacturer built a small displacement V12! Then stuff it into something beige like a Camry or a Passat and give it some life. I think the VAG has the best chance to do this, but I doubt that they will. Can you imagine a Golf GTI with a 2.5 V12?!

The noise alone would be awesome. Imagine how many aftermarket exhaust dumps would be installed.

Though in line with this discussion (sort of), I've always preferred big deep sounding V8's. Something about small displacement V12's don't do anything for me. If you Ferrari guys would throw something softer than rocks, I'd appreciate it. Just doesn't work for me. I'd rather have the 7.0L + V8's. It's really all about lots of little pistons or less big pistons.

Well I think one of the best noises to come from an engine is from the Aventador's 6.5L V12. It's not that I dont like a Big V8, there is just something special about the noise a V12 makes. It's like a symphony and makes different pitches as opposed to the big bellowing of a big V8. The small V12's sound crazy with their high pitched revs though.

Yeah they all have their unique sound, and honestly to me engine sounds are like music. You like some genres, and don't like others. Giving you like big Italian V12's maybe we'll call that Opera.

I think it's obvious that the 60's big block muscle cars should be country music. lol

Their big ol’ ‘Merican V8s work pretty well, and some of them work better than that. Just drove a GT350 with the 5.2 L flat plane engine. Even at 5.2L, it revs more freely to over 8,000 rpms than most engines, even ones that are much smaller. Yet it still torques from low revs like a ‘Merican V8 is famous for. Too bad I can't afford it. And, I'd like a smaller version, maybe 4 liters. I really don't need 526 hp.
